A New Career Through the Shipbuilding School

Sini Kangasmäki

Pipefitter and deputy occupational safety representative

Sini Kangasmäki, who now works as a pipefitter at Meyer Turku, found a new career path through our shipbuilding school. Previously employed as a tailor, Sini has always enjoyed working with her hands. When considering a career change, it was important to her that her new profession would also involve manual work.

The shipyard had already caught Sini’s attention as an interesting workplace, and after starting a family in the early 2000s, she decided to enroll in a retraining program offered by our shipbuilding school, choosing the pipefitter course.

After completing the course, Sini began working at the shipyard as a pipefitter. Over the years, she has taken on additional responsibilities. Today, she works in the engine room team as a senior fitter and also serves as a deputy occupational safety representative. A typical workday starts at 7 a.m., when the day’s tasks are reviewed. After that, Sini spends the day performing a variety of metalworking tasks together with her work partner.

Pipefitting is a hands-on and essential part of the shipbuilding process, meaning it plays a critical role in achieving broader project goals. Sini’s guiding principle for success at work is simple:

– If you do your best every day, good things will follow, she summarizes.
Sini describes Meyer Turku’s organizational culture as positive and open. Supervisors know their employees well, cooperation runs smoothly, and people are encouraged to be themselves at work. Sini particularly values the human connection and the care people show for one another in the workplace.

She strongly recommends the courses at Meyer Turku’s shipbuilding school to everyone:

– The courses are a direct path to employment at Meyer Turku, especially for those without previous training in the field. You learn the basics of the work, and you also get familiar with the company’s ways of doing things.
