The Central Warehouse Supports Shipbuilding Production

Saija Bezuidenhout

Group Manager, Central Warehouse

When Saija Bezuidenhout and her family were considering moving back to Finland from South Africa, their 10-year-old daughter made the decision simple: she wanted to live close to the Moomins. This led the family to settle in Naantali, right next to the home of the beloved characters – and conveniently close to the Turku shipyard.

With a strong background in industrial production, Saija has always been drawn to heavy industry. When choosing her next employer, it was important for her to find a company that was a pioneer in its field and offered opportunities for development. Meyer Turku was a clear choice.

Today, Saija works as a Group Manager at Meyer Turku’s Central Warehouse and has been part of the shipbuilding community for three years. She initially joined the shipyard as a Group Manager on the early-stage factory logistics side and transitioned to her current role about a year ago.

According to Saija, her typical workday is fast-paced, with time flying by.

– We have a lot of daily discussions with the team, exchanging ideas and thoughts. The core of our work is managing outfitting materials and delivering them to production, she explains.

In addition to daily operations, developing processes is a major part of Saija’s role. Her work is a vital part of the shipbuilding process.

– There is enormous potential for improvement in the central warehouse. We directly impact production lead times. We’re continuously thinking about additional value-added services that could support production logistically. That way, production teams can fully focus on their own work, Saija sums up.

Saija also sees a shift happening within the shipyard’s organizational culture. There is a strong spirit of renewal, with new emphasis on quality, sustainability, and human resources. She describes Meyer Turku as an exciting and multifaceted workplace.

For Saija, the most important factor is having a fun and supportive work community – especially during challenging moments.

– We have an amazing product, but even more amazing people making it, she says.
