Opportunities to Grow and Develop at the Shipyard
Matias Uusitalo
Head of Production Development Department
Matias Uusitalo began his career in shipbuilding in 2020. He has been working in his current role as Head of the Production Development Department for about a year.
The Production Development Department ensures that the operations of the broader production organization improve – if only slightly – every day. The department provides expert support and project management assistance for various development initiatives in production.
In his role as head of the department, most of Matias’s time is spent on communication to maintain a clear overall picture of the shipyard’s situation and the situation of his own team. He guides production development as a whole and supports individual development activities when needed.
The idea of working at the shipyard came to Matias as a result of a change in his personal life.
– As our family grew, we moved from downtown Turku to a place near the shipyard. I saw the large gantry cranes every day and began to think that it could be an interesting workplace so close by. I studied industrial engineering and management and have always been interested in technology and industry – but I had no previous experience or understanding of shipbuilding, Matias explains.
Matias started at the shipyard as a work planner in block outfitting. However, after the start, Matias was given the opportunity for an internal transfer to the production development department, where he has been comfortable ever since.
From a production development perspective, the shipyard is full of opportunities. Development efforts can lead to significant changes and meaningful impacts. Building a ship requires extensive collaboration across many roles and areas of expertise, meaning a single company like Meyer Turku offers a broad range of different tasks.
– My own career path has followed a certain trajectory with relatively few lateral moves. Still, I know that within Meyer Turku, it’s possible to make major transitions from one role to another, and the company supports this, says Matias.
He encourages anyone considering their career to approach Meyer Turku with an open mind. Shipbuilding involves far more than just industrial processes, and the shipyard offers a wide variety of interesting roles for people with different levels of experience, educational backgrounds, and interests. Matias also emphasizes the importance of attitude.
– Meyer Turku offers great opportunities to learn and move between roles. If you’re willing to learn and have the right attitude, doors will open, he sums up.
