Childhood dream came true

Laura Klami

Commissioning Engineer, Outfitting

Before a ship is ready to launch and be delivered to the client, our experts carry out extensive testing and inspection on the ship. One of the experts responsible for the commissioning of new ships is Laura Klami. Laura is a commissioning engineer working at the Turku shipyard.

Laura grew up close to the Helsinki shipyard and she has dreamed about working at a shipyard since she was a child. The dream finally came true in 2001 when she was employed by a shipyard as a HPAC engineer while still a student. She later became a quality coordinator in the commissioning department. After moving to Turku in 2011, Laura first worked at the Turku shipyard as a hull production manager and later as a production engineer. She was assigned to the outfitting team in 2016 and started working on commissioning.

Laura’s current job as a commissioning engineer is very diverse. Her tasks include launching arrangements, scheduling commissioning and quay tests, monitoring and reporting on ship completion progress, and sea trials and the related arrangements. This involves the selection of personnel for sea trials and planning of accommodation and mealtimes for the duration of the trials. During sea trials, Laura acts as a trial run supervisor and the operations supervisor’s partner in commissioning-related jobs. Laura says that her job starts at the design stage and ends when the warranty expires.

According to Laura, sea trials are the highlight of each project. She enjoys the versatility of the job and the opportunity to witness the entire shipbuilding process from the very beginning to delivery. All these years, Laura has been excited to go to work and genuinely loved her job. This is the most important part of working for Meyer. Laura says that her amazing colleagues are key to enjoying her job.

During her long career at the Turku shipyard, Laura has been part of major organisational changes, including the change of ownership and company name. She says that the current atmosphere of continuity at the workplace has reinforced her sense of security more than ever before.

“It is wonderful that we have such a large stock of orders for years to come. It has a positive impact on our personnel’s work attitude. I sincerely hope that I can work at Meyer Turku’s shipyard until retirement,” Laura sums up her current feelings.

Now Laura works for us as an outfitting manager!
