Seizing Opportunities Pays Off

Jami Kuusisto

LCA Lead

Jami Kuusisto works at Meyer Turku in the field of sustainability as part of the product development organization, leading life cycle assessment within the ESG team. His career path is a great example of how following your interests and boldly seizing new opportunities can lead to truly fascinating roles.

Jami began his career at the shipyard in the summer of 2018. While studying, he worked part-time and also completed his master’s thesis for Meyer Turku. After finishing his thesis, he continued working full-time.

– I’m really glad I was able to keep working throughout my studies without any major breaks, Jami says.

Today, Jami mainly focuses on various development projects aimed at reducing Meyer Turku’s carbon footprint. Collaboration with colleagues working on different sustainability and operational development projects is also a significant part of his daily work.

Over the years, Jami’s role has evolved organically along with changes and needs within the expert organization. His own interests have also played a major role in shaping his career. During his first summer job, he worked on developing applications for 3D printing. Later, new opportunities arose in sustainability projects, and thanks to his enthusiasm, Jami was brought into those efforts. Over time, he took on more responsibility and ownership in these initiatives. He describes his career progression as a combination of fortunate opportunities and personal passion.

– Even though it’s a cliché, every day at work really is different. My work is incredibly varied, but at its core, it’s all about data-driven discussions and development work with different stakeholders, Jami summarizes.

Jami describes the shipyard’s organizational culture as welcoming. In his close-knit team, the atmosphere is excellent.

– There are people I genuinely enjoy spending time with outside of work as well—so I’d say the atmosphere feels pleasantly home-like. It’s also inspiring to work among such skilled experts, and yet still feel like a full member of the team. It’s easy to speak openly with supervisors, and even upper management feels very accessible, he shares.

Jami feels his work plays a crucial role in achieving Meyer Turku’s long-term goals, such as building a carbon-neutral shipyard and ship concepts.

– That’s what makes my work so meaningful. It’s been especially rewarding to see how our efforts have had a concrete impact, for example, on the NEcOLEAP project, Jami says.
