Shipbuilding in Germany and Finland
Kalle Hyytiä
Project Manager, Project Management
Kalle Hyytiä’s career story is proof of the diversity of opportunities the shipbuilding industry offers to people who are eager to learn. Kalle’s story at Meyer began when he transferred from his previous employer ABB to our shipyard. Initially, he worked as a system administrator in power distribution and production. Next, he joined the Costa project.
Carnival Corporation & Plc is one of Meyer’s major shipping company clients, for whom we manufacture luxurious, innovative cruise ships both in Turku and at Meyer Werft’s facilities in Germany. In the Costa project, Kalle acted as the leader of the technical team in Turku for around two years before he was given an opportunity to work in Papenburg and learn Meyer Werft’s shipbuilding secrets.
The six-month secondment in Germany was an excellent opportunity to learn about German ways of working and the differences the building environment can make to the design process. Kalle’s job description included close cooperation with a German colleague. Kalle participated in the client and classification society’s meetings, internal reviews, and negotiations with system providers. This was an enlightening experience for Kalle, and he gained more understanding of Meyer’s practices in Finland and Germany and their differences. Kalle is happy that he was given the opportunity to work in Germany – in addition to being an important work experience, the post was an intensive immersion course in German.
As a deputy project manager at the Turku shipyard, Kalle worked closely with the client’s project organisation and was responsible for regular project management tasks. His duties included additional price calculations, technical solution reviews and project monitoring. Working with experienced project managers and a highly motivated line organisation is interesting and educational. Today, Kalle is a project manager himself.
Even though the opportunity to build solutions that are an outstanding display of skill is important, for Kalle, his colleagues and working with other people are the best parts of his job. Kalle and his colleagues are united by their passion to learn new skills and contribute to the finest cruise ships in the world.
