The wonderful world of shipbuilding
Aapo Helin
Area Manager, Mechanical Equipment
Aapo Helin has worked with us almost since his graduation. With a degree in mechanical and production engineering, Aapo became interested in the position of a hull assembly engineer at our shipyard five years ago. He sent us an application and went through – in his words – “a rather extensive recruitment process”, which opened him the door into “the wonderful world of shipbuilding”.
Aapo has enjoyed working in the industry. To Aapo, it is important that his job and future at the shipyard are secure. In addition to security and continuity, the occupational health, recreational and workplace benefits Meyer offers its employees make the job more rewarding.
The diversity of tasks is also extremely important to Aapo because he is active by nature and eager to learn new skills. In his first job at Meyer, Aapo coordinated the steel stocks for different painting and outfitting departments. He was also responsible for occupational safety and scheduling and monitored outsourced hull installation work. Aapo was given an opportunity to work as a site manager for subcontracting activities in Lithuania. After the secondment, he applied for the position of area manager in mechanical engineering through our internal recruitment system and got the job.
According to Aapo, his job as the area manager of engine rooms and decks in the outfitting organisation is interesting and diverse. Aapo is a supervisor responsible for his assigned engine rooms from design to delivery to the client and shipping company. His job also includes other responsibilities, such as various development projects and sea trial planning and monitoring.
Aapo feels that the long traditions of shipbuilding offer unlimited opportunities to people who are active, eager to learn new skills and interested in technology and engineering. The best part of shipbuilding is the shipyard’s professional network and close cooperation between different organisations and teams.
All work in the wonderful world of shipbuilding is topped off by the delivery of the completed ship to the client and crew. It is exciting to send out massive, innovative cruise ships to sail the world’s seas.
